What an Inspiration!

                        
Katherine Dunham has made a huge impact on me. I respect her as an artist, dancer, choreographer, activist, and anthropologist. She has inspired me to keep working on my movement. Not only has it inspired me to keep dancing, but it has inspired me to go beyond what anyone thinks is normal in my creativity and continue to do what I love. If my artistry does not look like anyone else’s work, it is ok to be different and bold because one day it may be respected and taught all over just as Katherine Dunham’s. 
I would consider researching more about the history of the moves I learn. Katherine really knew her stuff when it came to culture and I want to be just as educated about the movements I learn. I would be able to embrace it more and accurately teach it to others. 
If Dunham was to be at one of my rehearsals I would be so honored. I would ask her about performance tips to keep my audience engaged. I would want her to correct my technique and ask her help about embodying a technique so it could feel more natural versus learned.

The wait is over, I am here on my journey researching who Katherine Dunham is. Welcome to my blog. Every time I was in a dance class, her name, Katherine Dunham would come up in reference as being a great dancer and someone I should know if I’m going to study dance. I have researched her and I know who Katherine Dunham is, why she is important, and her contribution to dance. Keep reading and join me in discovering all about Katherine Dunham. Not only was Katherine Dunham female, but she was an American Black dancer and choreographer. Sounds like me, I love her already. Wikipedia tells us that, Dunham was born in Chicago June 22, 1909. Her mother was French Canadian and her father was African American.
